Left-side variant of 食 used as a hen radical, called しょくへん (shokuhen). Marks kanji related to eating and food. Component of 館 (building), 飲 (drink), 飯 (meal), 飼 (raise), 飾 (decorate), 飢 (hungry), 餓 (starve), 飽 (sated). Variant of Kangxi radical 184 (食). Modern Japanese forms also use the simplified 食 directly on the left.
