Hand (又) over earth (土) — working the soil. Distinct in origin from 聖 (sage), though it is also used as the Chinese simplified form of that character. In Japanese it appears as a phonetic body carrying KEI/KAI readings. Phonetic component of 軽 (light), 径 (path), 経 (sutra), 怪 (suspicious), 茎 (stalk).
